Women and men have an enormous responsibility to caring for, and nurturing, our bodies. Today, I am emphasizing women’s sexuality, the balance of power, and related conversations about stress, HPV, abnormal pap smears, fertility, and pregnancy.
Due to societal norms and conditionality we were taught from a young age and through history, that a woman’s role is to respond to men’s sexual desires. At the same time, women have been told to suppress or to refrain from discussing their own sexual desires.
And when fertile men and women come together sexually, there is the possibility of pregnancy. As humans, that is how we reproduce. That is how we create offspring. At a very primal level, that is what our bodies do.
Also, as humans, we are not educated about how to take care of or prioritize ourselves, nor are we taught how to connect with other humans in a reciprocal and honorable way. Thank goodness this is all changing, and yet many women are still held back by their own traumatic experiences, fears, and wounds.
For that reason – what I call a type of “stress”– women often find that become engaged in relationships with other humans, including sexual relationships, that end up in an imbalanced exchange.
In some cases, it is that one person is choosing a deeper connection than the other. Or, there can be a power imbalance – financial or in authority – that causes the relationship or connection to not be reciprocal.
It can be difficult to identify this imbalance at first. It can be subtle, or it can be absolutely clear. And yet we may continue to choose it over and over again because we don’t realize that we have the option to do something different, or we are afraid of the consequences of choosing differently, or saying no to the person.
Many women (and men for that matter) find themselves in this power imbalance in sexual relationships, and perhaps find it happening over and over again, wondering why and how to stop it.
Often women find themselves facing questions like this about their sexuality because of an HPV diagnosis, which we know is a sexually transmitted virus.
The most common questions women ask me are: Can I have sex when I know I have HPV? And when I get HPV to negative will I then not be able to give it to another person? The answers are yes and yes. Let me explain more.
Sexuality and the Causes of HPV
Please pay attention to this important fact: Most of us, as sexually active humans, are exposed to the HPV virus (4 out of 5 women by the age of 50). So, HPV is not caused by promiscuity, and while men do have the virus, in most cases they have no idea that they have it because there are no symptoms, unless they have a type of HPV that causes genital warts.
I say this because women often find themselves in a self-deprecating cycle of being hard on themselves for having sex and then finding out that they are positive for HPV. They may also find themselves feeling anxious, angry, and upset, wondering when and with whom they came in contact with the virus.
Ultimately, there is no way to know when you were exposed to the virus, or from whom. And being hard on yourself is not going to help because ultimately, most of us have been exposed to this virus.
What I find gives some hope in this situation is to know that most all humans are able to ward off the HPV virus.
Those who are struggling to fend off HPV on their own, can find resources and support to help them get back to a negative test result. That is exactly what I’ve seen with woman and my HPV protocol since the year 2000.
Sexuality is not the whole story though…
HPV is sexually transmitted, but it is not sex or exposure that allows it to stay or to cause abnormal cells or cancer.
What allows HPV to stay is the susceptibilities in one’s own body, and the biggest factor behind all of that is stress. When we are stressed, and that stress is allowed to cause imbalances in our bodies, then we become susceptible, vulnerable to the effects of HPV.
Stress causes decreased ability to digest food and absorb our nutrients, it causes leaky gut and inflammatory food reactions, it causes an imbalanced gut and vaginal bacteria (microbiome), it causes imbalanced cortisol, adrenaline, neurotransmitters, as well as imbalanced blood sugar, estrogen and progesterone, decreased estrogen detoxification and methylation, and increased expression of genes that increase risk of cancer.
All of this makes us susceptible to HPV and cancer caused by HPV.
The way out of it is to 1) prioritize yourself so you can recover from the stresses you’ve been exposed to (including stressful relationships with other humans) and 2) to learn to protect yourself – physically, emotionally, and energetically.

- HPV (especially the high risk types) can cause cancer
- HPV can go away (negative on a test) on its own within 2 years (90% do)
- Come back in 6-12 months to do another pap and see if it’s still there
- If HPV remains or if it causes abnormal cells, your doctor will offer medical procedures to remove the cells (or part of your cervix and/or your uterus)

You were the one choosing all along anyway, it just didn’t seem that way. You get to choose who you spend time with, who you connect with, how you connect with them, how much of yourself you share with them, and whether you are intimate with them.
Not because you are concerned about exposure to HPV. You know now – from what I teach – that I can help you get HPV to negative, but because you now recognize that connecting with you on a deeper level – a physical, emotional, energetic level – is very special and something you get to choose with intention to ensure that it is balanced and reciprocal.
