Why Avoiding Sugar Is the First Step to Clear HPV (Episode 326)

Studies show a single teaspoon of sugar can lower immunity for 8-10 hours, which matters if you're trying to clear HPV, cold and flu, or any other infection.
Blood sugar imbalances are linked to fatigue, mood swings, hormonal issues, abnormal cells and HPV susceptibility. Dr. Doni talks about gradually cutting refined sugar as the essential first step to help your body clear HPV.

Avoiding sugar is the most important first step you can take to improve your ability to clear high-risk HPV – and for your health in general.

Many women who are dealing with an abnormal Pap and HPV ask me: What can I do to start turning this around and prevent HPV from causing abnormal cells?

In a standard doctor’s office, you are likely be told to wait six or twelve months to see if things get worse or turn into cancer. That’s unsettling, to say the least!

It is much better to take action and ask what you can do between now and your next appointment to help prevent progression. That’s exactly what I help women and men do: Prevent progression and help your body clear high-risk HPV to negative.

Where do I begin? Helping to balance your blood sugar levels by decreasing sugar consumption.

Symptoms and Health Issues Associated with Blood Sugar Issues

Testing positive for high-risk HPV, and abnormal cells, is associated with blood sugar levels that are too low or too high. Even if it’s not to the point of diabetes.

Additional symptoms and health issues associated with blood sugar issues are:
Fatigue, sleep problems, mood fluctuations like anxiety, depression, and irritability, irregular cycles, PMS, cramps, PCOS/PMOS, perimenopausal or postmenopausal symptoms, bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, weight gain, skin issues, autoimmunity, and fertility issues.

Balancing blood sugar is also beneficial for the prevention of heart disease, dementia, and diabetes.

What Kind of Sugar Should You Avoid?

The sugar I’m talking about is white, refined sugar like what you’d put in tea or coffee, but it also hides in processed and packaged foods, from cereals and crackers to condiments and beverages, often in places you wouldn’t expect.

I encourage you to start reading labels and look for other names for sugar, such as cane sugar, dextrose, and high fructose corn syrup. These are all sugars we want to eliminate.

People often ask if they need to avoid fruit sugar too. Here’s the difference. White sugar from sugar cane is called sucrose, which is a combination of two sugars: Glucose and fructose.

  • Glucose is what spikes blood sugar, requiring insulin to move it into your cells. Over time, high glucose levels can lead to insulin resistance, where receptors stop responding well, and glucose stays stuck in the blood, which we refer to as “high blood sugar.”
  • Fructose, the other component of sucrose, doesn’t raise blood sugar the same way, and it’s the same sugar found naturally in fruit, honey, and maple syrup. I’m not saying to avoid all fructose, but it is possible to get too much, because the liver has to process excess glucose and fructose. If the liver gets overwhelmed, it can cause fatty liver due to turning extra sugar into fat that damages liver function.

How much is too much varies by person, depending on genetics, body size, and activity level. I sometimes joke I wish our bodies had a blinking red light to tell us when we’ve had enough, but they don’t, so we have to learn our own limits.

Glucose also comes from carbohydrates like rice, potatoes, and grains such as wheat, millet, barley, and oats, as well as vegetables like carrots and beets. For now, though, I want you to focus on refined, processed sugar and leave fruits and vegetables as they are.

Why It’s Worth Avoiding Sugar

Refined sugar is addictive. Consuming it creates cravings and eating it produces a feel-good period followed by a crash in energy and mood, a sugar roller coaster that leaves us wanting more just to feel normal again. The good news is you can reset this.

Some people prefer to cut sugar overnight, but that can bring withdrawal symptoms like tiredness and grumpiness for a day or two.

I recommend a gradual approach instead: Write down what you eat and drink each day, and identify simple swaps, like unsweetened coffee instead of a sugar cube. I don’t recommend artificial sweeteners like Splenda or sucralose, since they carry their own health risks. Stevia, a plant-based sweetener that doesn’t raise blood sugar, is a better option if you want something sweet.

Look for sugar in unexpected places: Salad dressings, ketchup, mustard, protein powders, and your own recipes. A broccoli salad or meat sauce often tastes just as good, if not better, without added sugar. When eating out, ask if there’s added sugar in your dish.

Think of it like a game: Identifying where unnecessary sugar is coming in and removing it. Most people who do this notice real changes, more energy (since sugar was actually draining it, not fueling it), weight loss, often around ten pounds in 2 to 4 weeks just from cutting sugar, better sleep, improved mood, and a stronger immune system.

Studies show a single teaspoon of sugar can lower immunity for eight to ten hours, which matters if you’re trying to clear HPV or any other infection, from colds and flu to yeast infections, SIBO, sinus infections, and bladder infections. Sugar disrupts the microbiome and makes it easier for other microbes to thrive.

Sugar also creates cravings that keep pulling us back, and the food industry offers no shortage of options. Changing this means deciding that this is your body and your experience, not something to be run by sugar cravings.

What to Eat Instead of Sugar

If you want something sweet, try cacao or high-percentage dark chocolate, like 85%, ideally without refined sugar, perhaps sweetened with coconut sugar or dates instead, or unsweetened is even better. Cacao and dates together can be delicious, and you may not even miss the sugar.

My friend Farzana wrote a cookbook with amazing recipes that will help you to avoid inflammatory foods like sugar, dairy, and gluten. I’ll be interviewing her here on How Humans Heal soon.

Small Adjustments Lead to Big Changes in Your Health

Health changes can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do everything at once, or even cut sugar overnight. Take it gradually, day by day, week by week. Once you’ve mastered avoiding sugar, you’ll be ready for the next step.

This is exactly how I guide people in my 30-Day Heal HPV Kickstart Program, starting with diet changes to balance blood sugar and avoid inflammatory foods, then introducing supportive supplements and stress-recovery practices one by one, over a structured 30-day schedule.

This step-by-step approach prevents overwhelm and helps break the cycle of repeat abnormal pap smears. As you create small changes, you start to feel better, which motivates you to keep going, and it becomes a way of life. You get to decide what goes into your body, and that choice can help your body protect itself, including from high-risk HPV.

How To Get More Info About My Approach to HPV and Health Overall

You can find more information about my approach to healing in my book, Master Your Stress Reset Your Health (available in ebook and audible forms).

What I find is that HPV is often just one sign that your body is asking for attention — and going through the process of addressing HPV can help you heal from anxiety, depression, migraines, sleep issues, hormone imbalances, gut issues, and more. That means this could be your opportunity to change the way you relate to your body and your health.

Here’s what I want you to hold onto: Every single one of the susceptibilities to HPV can be tested for, addressed, and resolved. You are not powerless in this situation — quite the opposite. By asking the right questions and doing the right tests, you can take real, meaningful control of your health and give your immune system exactly what it needs to protect you.

The standard medical system doesn’t run the right tests, and most practitioners aren’t trained to interpret and act on the results. But that doesn’t mean your options are limited — it means you need the right guide. I’ve helped patients around the world clear HPV and go on to feel better than they had in years, because when you rebalance your whole system, everything improves — your energy, your sleep, your mood, your resilience.
