Here’s the message I’ll never stop sharing: If you’re testing positive for high-risk HPV virus and experiencing vaginal infections like bacterial vaginosis or yeast infections, or maybe bladder infections, you need to pay attention. If you’re waking up feeling tired and dragging through the rest of the day, reaching for caffeine every chance you get, your body is trying to tell you something.
If you’re having anxious thoughts racing through your mind, constantly thinking about this virus and what it could do and how it could ruin your life, you’re not alone. If you’re feeling constipated or bloated, or just like you’re not digesting your food well, and you have a sense that something’s off with your gut or your microbiome, listen to that.
If your menstrual cycle is making you feel worse every time your period comes with cramping and bleeding, or maybe your cycle is irregular, or even if you’re postmenopausal, these are all messages from your body. If any of these things are occurring for you, the last thing you should do is ignore the HPV, because everything I just described is literally your body begging for your attention to help it correct these situations in order to clear high-risk HPV to negative.
You should not just wait and worry to see if high-risk HPV is going to cause abnormal cells or cause cancer when there’s so much you can do to prevent it from happening.
The White-Knuckling Trap
If this all sounds like you and you want to get rid of high-risk HPV, my first question for you is this: How long are you going to try to white-knuckle it with HPV? This is really common. I see it with my clients all the time. They all say the exact same thing to me. They want to get rid of high-risk HPV and they want to do whatever they can to get there.
However, what can happen is we get ourselves into a spiral of fear about HPV that can paralyze us. Then all you end up doing doing is feeling scared about whether it’s going to get worse, thinking about worst-case scenarios, thinking nothing’s ever going to change, and listening to people in the medical community who are saying “it’s never going to go away, there’s nothing you can do about it, and all you can do is wait and see if it causes cancer.”
This way of thinking puts us into a state of worry and fear such that we end up doing nothing even though we want to get rid of HPV.
Breaking Free from the Blame and Shame
How long are you going to keep trying to figure out who gave you the virus? A lot of women get stuck in that way of thinking. They can’t stop thinking of when they were exposed to HPV.
The fact is, we will never know who exposed you to high risk HPV, or when. And when it comes down to it, it doesn’t matter anyway. Most all of us are exposed to high-risk HPV. Eighty percent of us will test positive by age fifty, so it’s not an uncommon virus. It’s actually quite common, and there’s no way to test to find out exactly who gave it to you.
Women end up getting stuck in a spiral of stress and blame and shame where you’re just mad at yourself, worrying all day and all night, your hair’s falling out, you can’t sleep, you don’t feel good in your own body, and you don’t want to be intimate with anyone. I have to ask: At what expense are you delaying addressing HPV?
Instead of getting stuck in this spiral, how about we break the pattern and get to work protecting you?
You’re Focused on the Wrong Thing
Here’s where all of this goes off the rails: When we’re so locked in and focused on testing positive for HPV and the abnormal cells, we’re actually focused on the wrong thing. I know at first you’re thinking, wait a minute, the whole problem is HPV, what do you mean I’m focused on the wrong thing?
The more you focus on high-risk HPV and the worst-case scenarios of what it could cause in your body, you’re actually sacrificing your health by stressing yourself out. Over time with more and more worry, what we do is we raise our cortisol levels, and then we crave more sugar and we eat more sugar and we sleep less because we’re so upset.
You end up ignoring all the red flags from your body, ignoring the fact that you’re more and more stressed and your digestion is shutting down and your mood is lower, you’re becoming hopeless, your body’s inflamed, and you’re likely completely burned out.
While you are harder and harder on yourself about why you got into this situation, what’s happening under the surface is that your immune system is becoming more and more depleted. Your immune system is the one thing that actually could protect you from high-risk HPV.
The Stress-HPV Connection
When we’re under stress, trauma, and worry, cortisol levels can either go way up high or way down low. Either way, the immune system drops down, making you more susceptible to all different kinds of infections including high-risk HPV.

Cortisol that is too high or low also disrupts all the other hormones in your body: Thyroid, insulin, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone. The microbiome gets even more out of balance, so now your gut microbiome isn’t supporting your immune system and your vaginal microbiome is not protecting you from high-risk HPV.
What little energy you had left is now completely gone, so now you’re too exhausted to do anything else. Then next time you go for a Pap smear, the risk is the abnormal cells will have progressed to more severe cells, and the doctor starts talking about a procedure to remove the cells.
Round and round it goes. You have a procedure, and yet the procedure doesn’t kill the virus, and so you worry again: is it going to come back? And lo and behold, six months later, twelve months later, even a couple years later, now the high-risk virus causes abnormal cells again and you’re right back in the gynecologist’s office for another biopsy, and another procedure.
They’re still not addressing the high-risk virus and they’re still not addressing your stress or your immune system or your microbiome.
The HPV Nightmare Cycle
This HPV nightmare that women get stuck in is not about being disciplined and it’s not about having willpower. It’s about physiology. Every bit of stressing about HPV without taking any action to support your body to recover makes the situation even worse.
I see women go down this path over and over and become more and more isolated and more and more entrenched in the HPV nightmare. That’s why I want you to know about it. Ask yourself: are you stuck in this pattern? Because as soon as you see it, as soon as you recognize it, you have the ability to do a one-eighty and get yourself out of there.
When women come to me and tell me that nothing’s working, HPV won’t go away, I get it, because your body doesn’t feel safe. Your body’s been in a state of fear and stress, and every single time you go back to the doctor’s office and have another procedure, there’s more stress and you send yourself into a spiral of worry, again.
The body adapts and tries to self-preserve, but that self-preservation only puts you into more of a state of risk with HPV.
The Real Path to Healing HPV
Here’s what no one else is teaching you out there, and you’re not going to hear this in the regular doctor’s office: there is a way to get HPV to negative and keep it negative, even if you’re exposed. And no, it’s not just about taking a single supplement or mushroom extract, and it’s certainly not about being harsh on yourself and punishing yourself.
It’s literally the opposite. What your body needs is the opposite of that. The real work is setting the stage for true healing, inner healing on a physical level, emotional level, and even spiritual level. You must support the systems that support your immune system first.
The human immune system has the ability to clear the high-risk HPV virus and protect you from it going forward.
So how long are you going to white-knuckle it and push yourself harder, even if you’re pushing yourself to exercise harder or restrict your diet harder? It actually could make the situation worse, and you’ll just end up feeling more miserable.
Even if you get a negative HPV result, it might be temporary because you haven’t addressed the real issue deeper underneath, and so it could come back positive again in a few years.
I urge you to take the time to stand back and listen to the messages from your body, listen to the red flags that HPV is showing you. Build a foundation that allows your body to finally feel safe, to feel nourished, where you can get out of stress and finally start healing.
Your immune system can heal. Your immune system can protect you when you’re not feeling stressed and overwhelmed, when your cortisol comes back to optimal and starts sending healthy signals to your immune system, and when your microbiome can get back on track and your hormones back on track.
Now your immune system knows that it’s a safe space to protect you, so you can finally go after the HPV virus and create a memory in your immune system so that it can protect you going forward.
Transformation Beyond HPV
You don’t have to stop being intimate. We just need to stop stressing about it and start focusing on supporting your body to heal.
