6 Myths About HPV That Are Keeping You Stuck (And What to Do Instead) (Episode 300)

There are a lot of myths around abnormal pap results. Dr. Doni dispels 6 of these common myths and talks about what to do to actually clear HPV (yes, it is possible!).
High-risk HPV is associated with cancer risk for both men and women. Dr. Doni talks about six myths keeping women stuck, including misconceptions about multiple partners, whether HPV is permanent, and the importance of addressing underlying susceptibilities to help your body clear the virus.

Have you gotten an abnormal pap smear result and tested positive for high-risk HPV virus? Are you searching online and getting confused because there’s so much conflicting information that it ends up spiraling into paralysis of not knowing what to do?

You’re in the right place because I’m going to be breaking down six of the most common myths and misconceptions about high-risk HPV and abnormal pap smear results so that we can set the record straight and you can get to helping your body heal.

I’m Dr. Doni Wilson. I’m a women’s health expert, a naturopathic doctor and midwife, and I’ve been helping women with abnormal pap smears for over 25 years. That means I’ve helped thousands of women in this situation. When you’re looking for information online, you may or may not be getting information from someone who has this much experience helping women reverse an abnormal pap smear and get rid of HPV once and for all.

I encourage you to ask yourself: who is sharing this information? What is their training and experience? This is true even about conventional medical practitioners. If their training is in surgery or medications, they probably don’t have training in how to use diet, nutrients, herbs, and natural approaches to help you heal.

I just want you to have the correct information so that you can make an informed decision for yourself. I work with women every day, and we see women turning abnormal Pap smears and high-risk HPV to negative. It’s changing their lives. I wouldn’t want you to miss out on that or to have things progress when you could have taken action sooner. Let’s dig into these six common myths.

Myth 1: High-Risk HPV Is Because of Having Multiple Sexual Partners

Women are still led to believe that high-risk HPV virus is because of having multiple sexual partners. While having more sexual partners increases exposure risk, I hear all the time from women who’ve only had one or two sexual partners and they’re dealing with high-risk HPV and an abnormal pap smear.

Many women say, “How come I’ve been in the same relationship for 30 years and now I’m dealing with this?” That’s more common than we realize.

High-risk HPV is actually quite common. Eighty percent of us will test positive by age 50. It doesn’t require numerous sexual partners to be exposed. I want you to be gentle with yourself because women often feel embarrassed, thinking people will assume they had multiple sexual partners. We need to stop making that assumption because it’s simply not the case.

Even if you knew exactly where you got this virus and when, it wouldn’t change the fact that you currently have it. Be present with yourself and have compassion. You are human. Humans have sex, and humans get exposed to high-risk HPV. It’s a very common virus, so there’s nothing to be ashamed about.

This is not just something women deal with. Men deal with this too. There are 14 types of high-risk HPV associated with cancer risk for both men and women. Women are more often screened and find out sooner. Sometimes men don’t find out until they develop cancer. Instead of getting caught up in how this happened, let’s focus on how to help you protect yourself from this virus because that’s absolutely possible to clear the virus and prevent cancer.

Myth 2: HPV Will Never Go Away

Women are told all the time that it’s not possible for HPV to go away. Sometimes practitioners say it will never go away, you’ll have it for the rest of your life. From my experience, that’s simply misinformation.

If your practitioner would read the research, they’d see that the human immune system can clear HPV to negative. It doesn’t go dormant. It can actually be gone and stay gone.

As soon as I started supporting the body to clear the virus, I started seeing it clear to negative over and over. We see cases all the time, stay negative for years and years into the future.

If you’ve been thinking it’s never going to go away and what’s the point of trying, let’s rethink that. It can go away, and therefore there is a reason to invest in your health.

The fact that HPV is testing positive is a message from your body. There’s a reason why HPV is here. It’s not just because you were exposed. There’s something in your body causing you to be susceptible. The research shows 90% of people clear the virus within two years of testing positive. If you’re still testing positive after two years, there’s a reason. We need to ask why your body’s not clearing it.

I have identified eight most common susceptibilities to high-risk HPV. When we systematically address each of the eight susceptibilities, that’s when I see women completely clearing HPVs virus and preventing it from coming back again.

Myth 3: The Virus Is Passed Back and Forth Between Partners

A lot of people think the virus is passed back and forth between partners. They ask me: “Even if you clear the virus but then have sex with the same partner and get exposed again, won’t it just come right back?”

I help women who are still sexually active with the same partner, and they are able to get a negative HPV results and keep it negative, even when re-exposed.

Studies have documented that having sex with the same partner doesn’t increase your risk or decrease your ability to clear the virus. Many women who follow my protocol are married and sexually active with the same partner, and they have been able to fend off HPV by supporting their immune system and their inner defense mechanisms.

When women realize they can build up their fortress and fend off HPV even if exposed again, they gain confidence. You can have sex with confidence. You can date without fear of giving it to your partner.

When you clear HPV to negative, you’re not going to be able to give it to your partner. That’s the beauty of aiming for a negative HPV result. The virus cannot cause cancer for you and cannot be passed to your partner. Imagine the freedom of being intimate without fear.

Myth 4: You Should Just Wait and See

When you test positive for high-risk HPV and maybe low-grade abnormal cells, the doctor might say, “Let’s just wait and see.” What are you waiting for? Are you waiting to see if you’re in the 90% where your body clears it naturally, or in the 10% where it doesn’t clear and could get worse?

I wouldn’t want to just wait for that. That feels like gambling with not great odds. If someone said you can either wait around and do nothing, and maybe it’s going to turn into cancer in the next six to twelve months, I would say no thank you. I would rather follow a protocol and take action to make sure you’re in the 90%. Get an insurance policy and start taking care of yourself and figure out what your body’s been trying to tell you.

This is taking your health into your own hands. Instead of months of fear and anxiety and dread of the next doctor’s appointment, what if we give you a strategic protocol to follow? When you go back to your next appointment, you’ll know you’ve been taking action. You’ll go in with confidence, and when you get your results and see that it’s negative, you’re know “I helped my body protect me from HPV.”

Myth 5: Diet Has Nothing to Do with HPV

A lot of times women tell me their doctors told them that diet has nothing to do with HPV and abnormal cells on the cervix. I’m floored by this because I’m a naturopathic doctor and clinical nutritionist. I’ve been learning about nutrition since the 1990s and using it to help people heal their bodies.

Most practitioners don’t learn nutrition in their training. Most doctors have very little education about diet and nutrition, so of course they’re going to say diet doesn’t make a difference.

In my world, diet makes all the difference. Our diet is where our nutrients come from. Our nutrients create our immune system and healthy cells and feed our healthy microbiome. Our food has everything to do with whether we’re testing positive for HPV.

I begin with teaching women how you’re feeding yourself and how we can make small incremental changes so we can make a difference in how your body’s functioning and protecting you. You’re not going to be starving yourself or eating boring things. You’re going to be eating really yummy, healthy foods with the right knowledge and understanding of how to eat in a healthy way.

You don’t want to try to figure this out on your own because there are too many conflicting bits of information out there.

Even once we get your diet optimized, we still need additional nutrients for the clinical purpose of helping your cervix heal and your immune system clear the virus. Working with someone like me can streamline things for you. Instead of trying to recreate the wheel, let me teach you exactly what to do, simplify it, and make it easy to implement so you can get to healing.

Myth 6: It’s Your Fault and You Have to Deal with It Alone

Women often internalize this diagnosis and feel angry with themselves, depressed, and even disgusted, feeling like they did something wrong, ruined their life, can’t fix it, and can’t tell anybody. Women feel like they have to deal with HPV alone.

What saddens me is the number of women treating cervical cancer and even dying from cervical cancer alone, without telling their family members.

I want to break this myth and help you to know that you do not have to be alone with this. I’m here. This is something we talk about in my office every day. You can come to my Instagram or YouTube channel and see me talking about this because I want to help you know that you are not alone, it is not your fault, and there’s nothing to be ashamed of.

No matter what your culture, religion, or family thinks, you’re human, and this happens to humans. We are all impacted by stress, nutrient deficiencies, and hormone imbalances, and all of this creates susceptibility to high-risk HPV. It’s not your fault. Nobody taught you this. Your doctor may have even dismissed this as a concern, and then another year goes by and things get worse.

The fact that you’re searching tells me you’re starting to think outside the box and take your health into your own hands. No matter what anybody else says, invest in helping your body heal because you want to be free of HPV.

What is the message HPV has for you?

Maybe the message is believing in your body’s ability to heal. Maybe it’s that you are loved and can love yourself. Maybe it’s time to prioritize you. Maybe your nutrients got depleted and you’ve been eating things that were working against you, and now you have the opportunity to change that.

I invite you to be curious and have compassion for yourself. Being hard on yourself only makes things worse. Take a breath, be gentle, and say “I deserve support.”

I have a whole HPV healing community of women in the same situation, so you do not have to be alone. You can join us and learn with other women and share with them. It’s a beautiful, sacred healing space where you get to show up as yourself without being afraid of what anybody thinks.

I see amazing transformations. Women who’ve been dealing with HPV for years, surgeries, biopsies, doctors telling them there was nothing they could do, find me from the UK to Australia to Africa to India. These women start following my protocol step by step, and little by little they notice things in their body changing. Then they get retested, and that HPV goes to “not detected.” They feel on cloud nine because now they know what to do to keep it gone and protect themselves going forward.

The human immune system has the ability to clear high-risk HPV virus. We just need to know what’s making you susceptible to the virus so we can support you to address those factors. Then you’ll be able to maintain your resilience to HPV by continuing to support your health. This is absolutely possible using the Dr. Doni’s HPV Protocol.
