Too often when women are dealing with health issues – whether menstrual-related problems, perimenopause, menopause, vaginal infections, recurrent yeast, BV, high-risk HPV, or abnormal pap smears – we’re left without enough information.
Women are experiencing fatigue, weight they can’t seem to lose, autoimmunity, gut health issues, skin rashes, anxiety, depression, and migraines. I’ve been there. I’ve experienced these symptoms too. I know how difficult it is to get answers and to get real help.
The standard medical approach, particularly for women’s health issues, relies on very few test results. You can do a blood test, and but the commonly ordered blood tests often don’t include the tests that would provide the specific information we need to figure out the underlying issues.
Women are told that everything looks “normal,” even though women don’t feel like themselves.
A gynecologist can do a vaginal swab to look for yeast and BV, but often it’s missed. Women could be experiencing discharge and discomfort, and but doctor’s office says they can’t identify the cause.
If you’ve been dealing with any kind of health issues and you’ve already been to the doctor’s office, they’ve sent you home saying all of your blood work is normal and/or your vaginal culture is normal, or if you’re dealing with recurrent bladder infections and the doctor says you can just keep taking antibiotics—to me, that’s just not enough of an answer.
My Journey and Approach to Health and Medicine
If I haven’t met you before, I’m Dr. Doni Wilson. I’m a naturopathic doctor, midwife, and clinical nutritionist. That means I was trained as a primary care provider for women’s health, and I understand all of the guidelines of standard medicine. Yet many years ago I too was in the gynecology office with migraines, severe menstrual cramps, and high-risk HPV.
I experienced for myself that the doctor wasn’t able to help me beyond just a procedure or a birth control pill. I react to birth control pills, so I couldn’t even take that solution. I realized there has got to be more answers out there, and so I became a medical investigator for my own health but also for my patients.
I’ve been in practice for 25 years helping women in the tri-state New York, Connecticut area as well as around the world. What I do now is specialty care for women dealing with all different types of health issues. I trained as a women’s health expert in functional, holistic, naturopathic medicine in the ’90s, and I’m still learning through my own health journey and through thousands of women I’ve helped over the years.
You Don’t Have to Settle for Limited Health Information
What I want you to know right now is that you don’t have to settle for having too little information.
There are ways to get more precise, specific information about what’s going on in your body from a regular blood test at a regular lab that is likely going to get covered by insurance. We just need to make sure you know which tests to order. Most practitioners have not received the training I’ve received, and so they don’t know how to order the correct tests for nutrient levels, for example. And without that data, we won’t know what the underlying issue is and how to solve it.
How many of you are thinking, “I just want to get to the bottom of this and get it to stop happening”? I don’t want to be stuck on a medication or repeat antibiotics or repeat procedures for an abnormal pap smear. I want to be done with this situation and be able to go on with my life feeling good. I want you to know that’s possible.
Just today, a woman in my Women’s Healing Community posted improvements based on following my suggestions. I’m helping her get rid of HPV and address severe menstrual cramps. She reported that on the first day of her period, for the first time ever, she was able to go for a 12-mile hike in the woods without any menstrual cramps. I myself had severe menstrual cramps and solved them, and now I can help other women solve them too, just the way that I solved migraines, fatigue, HPV, and recurrent infections.
If you’re struggling with your health, please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office. You can go to doctordoni.com and connect with my office from there, or call us at 855-316-2114 and set up a time to talk with my care team.
I just spoke to one of my patients in the UK yesterday. She’s been following my protocol for the past two months and has lost 26 pounds that she was trying to lose so many different ways. All we did was figure out which foods were inflammatory for her and eliminated them, and helped her start healing leaky gut and helping her to address imbalanced bacteria in the gut and vagina. Now she has energy, a better mood, excitement about her life, and she’s coming up on when she’s going to be rechecking to see that the HPV has also cleared, which I’m sure it will have.
That’s what I see as women learn—this is the information you needed all along that is just not going to happen in the standard doctor’s office. I wish it was. I hope in the future that these tests are going to happen in the standard doctor’s office, but right now the best way to get access to this information is through my office at doctordoni.com, where you can come to me and say, “Here’s what’s going on,” and then I can say, “Here’s the tests we need so we can individualize this.” We don’t want to just guess and tell everybody to do the same thing because we’re not all the same.
The 5 Essential Tests You Need to Know About
Now I want to share with you the five tests that I want you to know about that are likely not available through your standard doctor’s office. These are tests that can give you the specific information you need to truly understand what’s going on in your body and get to the root cause of your health issues. As I go through each one, think about whether these might be tests you need to get done for yourself.
1) Comprehensive Blood Work
The first test I want you to know about is to get comprehensive blood work. Most times when you go to the doctor’s office, they’re going to run a CBC and a comprehensive metabolic panel. The CBC looks at your red blood cells and white blood cells. The metabolic panel shows us your electrolytes, kidney function, and liver function. If you don’t have anemia and you don’t have kidney or liver issues, your blood work is going to be normal. But that doesn’t mean that they checked any nutrient levels. That just means you don’t need to be in the hospital.
We need to know more than that. Even if you’re dealing with bladder infections, vaginal infections, or perimenopausal symptoms, we need the right blood work. We need to do a comprehensive thyroid panel, not just a TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) blood test. We need to check free T3 and free T4. Those are your free active thyroid hormone levels. Most practitioners don’t measure them, but I do because I want to know what is your active thyroid hormone function. There are ways to support the thyroid with nutrients and herbs, or if necessary, we can give only what’s needed in terms of hormone support.
Then we need to check your blood sugar levels. How’s your fasting glucose? How’s your fasting insulin? And how’s your hemoglobin A1C? Sometimes you might not have diabetes, but you might have imbalances in your blood sugar levels that are also contributing to your health issues. Once we know that, we can start helping you make diet changes to fix that.
It’s worth it to get the right test, to get the right information so you can take the right steps. If you don’t have the right information, you’re going to just be going nowhere or guessing. I want you to have a target so you can hit the bullseye.
On the blood work, we also need to know specific nutrients. Vitamin D can be measured. For iron, I run a ferritin level. For B vitamins, I would not even bother with folate and B12. If your doctor orders those, it tells me they are not aware of the correct, most preferred way to measure your B vitamin levels, which is with homocysteine and methylmalonic acid. These are tests that can be done in a regular blood draw. You just need a practitioner like me who can give you the list to request. Please know that I’m available to help you with ordering the right blood work.
We also need to get cardio CRP. If you’re postmenopausal, we need to be measuring myeloperoxidase and C-telopeptide. There’s more we need to be doing and can do in your blood work that probably is not getting done in the standard doctor’s office.
2) Food Sensitivity Panel
A second test that I definitely want to highlight that’s not going to happen at the doctor’s office right now, but will happen through my office, is a food sensitivity panel. I’m talking about an IgA and IgG panel—it includes both IgA and IgG antibodies. I’m not testing IgE, although in some cases we need an IgE, but IgE can be done checked through an allergist. The information we are most often missing is whether you have delayed food sensitivities, and that’s what we find on an IgA and IgG food panel.
There are a lot of labs that offer food sensitivity panels and they’re not all accurate, so be very careful. I recommend reaching out to my office so I can tell you exactly the lab that does the best job at checking food sensitivities, because that also will indicate to us about leaky gut and if we need to work on healing your gut as well.
3) Stress Panel
The third test I really want you to know about is what I call a stress panel, and it shows us how all the stress you’ve been exposed to is impacting your stress hormones, cortisol and adrenaline. If we guess that you have high cortisol, we’re not going to get anywhere. We may actually work against you and make things worse. It’s so much better to measure cortisol.
While you can measure cortisol in blood at a single time, what I recommend is to measure cortisol morning, midday, evening, and bedtime in either saliva or urine. This way we can really see what’s going on with your cortisol throughout the day and night. Then I can guide you with the right herbs, nutrients, and self-care to optimize your cortisol and essentially erase the effects of stress.
I also recommend measuring adrenaline and neurotransmitters in urine based on my research that showed that if we only measure cortisol, we’re going to miss out on information about the other stress hormone adrenaline and the neurotransmitters.
Then we can really help you recover from stress because we know that when we’re exposed to stress and trauma, that impacts our system and makes us more susceptible to health issues like HPV. We need to help you recover from stress and trauma in order to protect you from health issues, including high-risk HPV and any cancer risk.
4) Urine Hormone Panel
The fourth panel that I want to make sure you know exists is a urine hormone panel. Yes, we do sometimes measure estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone in blood, and sometimes check levels in saliva depending on if you’re on hormone replacement therapy. But I want you to know that you can only get so much information from blood levels of estrogen and progesterone.
What’s going to be more helpful in a lot of cases is to measure estrogen in the urine so we can also measure the estrogen detoxification markers and determine whether you need more assistance detoxifying estrogen.
Is your estrogen too high and we need help to detoxify it? Is your estrogen too low and we need help to support it in a healthy way with bioidentical individualized hormone replacement therapy? This is especially important if you’re postmenopausal. I have other videos about menopause and hormone replacement therapy if you want to learn more.
5) Vaginal Microbiome Panel
The fifth test that I want to make sure you know exists, because it’s not going to come up in the standard doctor’s office, is a vaginal microbiome panel.
You may have heard of gut microbiome panels, but I’m thinking that maybe you have not heard of a vaginal microbiome panel. This is so important for women, especially when you’re dealing with bladder infections, vaginal infections, yeast, BV, or HPV. We need to know what’s going on with your microbiome so that we can address it. With this information, I can be much more specific to make sure you have a treatment that’s going to work.
Whenever possible, I’m using treatments other than antibiotics. I’m using herbs, nutrients, and probiotics that help the vaginal microbiome heal. I see case after case where women go from completely imbalanced vaginal microbiome to a completely healthy vaginal microbiome. At that point you can protect yourself from infections, including high-risk HPV virus.
Moving Forward with Hope and Clarity
I’m so glad you found this information. I hope this gives you hope and clarity to know that you don’t have to be left in confusion and being told that everything’s normal when you know it’s not normal.
If you’re resonating with this and you’ve been looking for someone to help guide you, then please reach out to me. My team and I are training more practitioners according to my protocols to be able to help women because I believe that women deserve much better medical care than we’re receiving, and I want to be part of creating a change in women’s healthcare.
This perspective helps me and my patients know that they can go forward into their life without being in a constant state of fear or without finding the answers they are looking for. This is why so many women who follow my protocol describe it as a transformation, because they literally have transformed their health and their relationship to their body and themselves in the process.
