There’s more to vitamin C than you think! Dr. Doni breaks down all the best benefits of this supplement and gives you her optimum dosage and type of vitamin C recommendations.
Feel a sniffle coming on? Sneezing and coughing? Vitamin C is the go-to for most people to help chase a cold away.
Vitamin C has impressive benefits including:
- Synthesizing collagen
- Healing wounds
- Repairing and maintaining bones, cartilage, and teeth
- And as an antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals— you know, those unreliable molecules that can damage your cells at the genetic level
Vitamin C is naturally found in fruits and vegetables (broccoli, citrus fruits, tomatoes, avocados, and many more), but an estimated 8.4% of the U.S. population does not get enough vitamin C.

Although the most commonly used types of vitamin C are Ester and buffered, I find that patients get the best results from liposomal vitamin C because of its improved absorption. CLICK HERE TO SEE THE LIPOSOMAL C THAT I RECOMMEND.
Vitamin C is water soluble and is quickly metabolized and eliminated in the urine, so the body can handle approximately 500mg of vitamin C at a time. Take your vitamin C frequently throughout the day instead of consuming a large amount all at once (which could result in loose stools).
I recommend the following dosage:
- 50 to 1000mg per day or,
- 500 mg 4x per day for clinical purposes (such as fighting off a cold virus or bladder infection)
- For children, you can use the rule of 100 mg per year of age (for example, 500mg a day for a 5-year-old child).
Note: Avoid sugars and sweeteners in chewable forms of vitamin C.
Vitamin C Benefits
There’s so much more to vitamin C than you probably realize. Let’s look at 10 of the most impressive benefits of this amazing ascorbic.
1. ALLERGY BENEFITS
During an allergic reaction, the immune system triggers an inflammatory response that can lead to symptoms such as swelling and hives. During this process, the body produces that pesky ROS (Reactive Oxidated Species), which can lead to oxidative stress.
In a 2018 study of intravenous vitamin C treatments in the treatment of allergies (cited by the National Institute of Health), concludes that taking a high dose of vitamin C may help reduce allergy symptoms. They also found evidence to suggest that low vitamin C levels were common in people with allergies.
2. CANCER FIGHTING BENEFITS
Preclinical studies show that high-dose vitamin C could kill cancer cells or retard tumor growth.
It is an antioxidant and immune support, protecting cells from toxins and viruses that can cause cancer. That’s why I recommend vitamin C as part of a bundle of select supplements in reversing HPV before it leads to cancer.
3. ANTIOXIDANT BENEFITS
Antioxidants are molecules that can strengthen your body’s natural defenses. They work by protecting cells from harmful molecules called free radicals. Antioxidants help remove unwanted substances known as reactive oxidative species (ROS) from the body.
Free radicals result from natural bodily processes, exposure to pollution, and other factors. When ROS gets out of control it can lead to oxidative stress, which can, in turn, cause cell damage and chronic disease.
I love this! Studies show that consuming more vitamin C can increase your blood antioxidant levels by up to 30%. This helps the body’s natural defenses fight inflammation. Source: National Institute of Health
4. BOOST IMMUNITY BENEFITS
The easy and quickest explanation for why vitamin C is such a powerful immune booster is that it encourages the production of white blood cells known as lymphocytes and phagocytes. These white blood cells help protect your body against infection.
Listen to my recent podcast about the right blend of supplements to protect you and your loved ones from infection, flus, and viruses.
5. BRAIN POWER BENEFITS
Oxidative stress and inflammation near the brain, spine, and nerves can increase your risk of dementia. Low levels of this vitamin C have been linked to an impaired ability to think and remember.
There are natural remedies and supplements that you can use right now to protect your brain power.
6. BLOOD PRESSURE BENEFITS
High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, has been called the silent killer. That’s because it often has no symptoms, yet it is considered a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
And when you consider that almost half of U.S. adults have high blood pressure, well then, it may be time to start paying attention to studies that have shown that vitamin C may help lower blood pressure in both those with and without high blood pressure. Source: John Hopkins Medicine
P.S. People with high blood pressure should not rely on vitamin C alone for treatment.
7. HEART HEALTH BENEFITS
Another analysis of 13 studies looked at the effects of taking at least 500 mg of vitamin C daily if you have risk factors for heart disease, like high blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The analysis found that taking a vitamin C supplement significantly reduced LDL (bad) cholesterol by approximately 7.9 mg/dL and blood triglycerides by 20.1 mg/dL.
8. ANEMIA AND IRON ABSORPTION BENEFITS
Did you know that vitamin C has a significant role in the absorption of iron. Vitamin C supplements assists in converting iron that is poorly absorbed, such as plant-based sources of iron, into a form that is easier to absorb. This information is important for my vegans and vegetarian friends, as meat is a major source of iron for everyone else.
9. GOUT RELIEF BENEFITS
Approximately 4% of American adults experience a type of arthritis known as gout. Gout is an extremely painful inflammation of the joints and is the result of too much uric acid in the blood that crystallizes and deposits in the joints.
Several ongoing studies have shown that vitamin C may help reduce uric acid in the blood.
I want you to keep in mind that while there appears to be a strong link between vitamin C intake and uric acid levels, more studies on the effects of vitamin C and gout are needed.
10. WOUND HEALING BENEFITS
Vitamin C is an essential part of the skin’s defense system. Its active antioxidant properties help strengthen the skin’s barriers, improve healing, and reduce scarring.
Now you know why I insist that my patients add vitamin C nutrients to their daily line-up. This is the one that I always recommend: my Vitamin C Support. Not only is it created from multiple sources rich in vitamin C, it’s the kind that has the best absorption: liposomal vitamin C.
