HPV and Supplements: Which Supplements to Take to Clear HPV (Episode 319)

Supplements can help clear HPV, but there's no magic pill. Dr. Doni explains why clearing HPV requires a comprehensive protocol addressing diet, gut health, hormones, and emotional healing.
Supplements can help clear HPV, but there's no magic pill. Dr. Doni talks about the importance of a comprehensive protocol, and how diet, gut health, hormones, and emotional healing all play a vital role in clearing HPV.

Welcome to How Humans Heal. In this episode, I’m going to answer the question so many of you ask me: which supplements should I take to help my body clear high-risk HPV and prevent abnormal cells or cancer associated with it?

I want to walk you through the research on specific nutrients that have been shown to be protective against high-risk HPV and to help reverse abnormal cells. That way, you can get the information you need to start thinking about which supplements to take.

I also invite you to grab whatever supplements you currently have, so we can look at the ingredients together and figure out whether they’re high quality and whether they contain effective nutrients at effective doses.

Unfortunately, time after time when I sit down with women from around the world, whether one-on-one or in a program, the supplements they’re taking are not high quality, don’t contain nutrients in active forms, and are not at effective doses. The same is often true of supplements marketed online for HPV: some have good ingredients, but not in adequate quantities to be effective.

It’s a Comprehensive Protocol, Not a Magic Pill

With 26 years of experience helping thousands of women and men dealing with both high-risk and low-risk HPV, what I’ve seen is that it is absolutely possible to clear HPV and get to a negative result, but there is no quick fix and no single supplement that will do it alone.

We need a comprehensive protocol that includes nutrients from your diet, oral supplements, herbs, natural products such as probiotics, homeopathy and peptides, as well as vaginal application of nutrients, herbs and probiotics. However, it doesn’t help to have a list of 50 products to take. We need a strategic plan based on your body and your test results.

Plus, we need to look at your body as a whole and not just take products because they sound good. We need to look at your: gut health, gut and vaginal microbiome, hormone levels, including cortisol, neurotransmitter levels, and your stress response. All of that matters when it comes to protecting yourself from HPV.

And I would argue it’s not just about addressing the physical body. Healing on a mental, emotional, and spiritual level is an essential part of a successful plan to clear HPV.

This comprehensive approach is true for women in their 20s through their 70s, across all high-risk HPV types, and regardless of how long you’ve been dealing with it. Even if you’ve had HPV for 15 years or more, or have previously had HPV-related cancer, there are still things we can do to rebuild your body’s protective capacity.

Start with Diet

Research going back to 1990 shows that a diet high in fruits and vegetables is protective against cervical cancer. Fruits and vegetables provide vitamin C, beta-carotene, and other antioxidants.

I encourage you to reduce sugar (white sugar suppresses your immune system) and increase your intake of foods like berries, broccoli, arugula, leafy greens, and a variety of colorful vegetables. It’s not about perfection; it’s about making small improvements each time you go to the grocery store.

Why Start with a Multivitamin

Rather than overwhelming yourself with 10 different bottles of individual nutrients, I recommend starting with one high-quality multivitamin.

A 2010 study in the Integrative Journal of Gynecological Cancer showed that women who took a multivitamin containing antioxidants like vitamins A, C, and E, selenium, as well as B vitamins, and minerals had a lower risk of CIN1, CIN2, and CIN3, which are high grade abnormal cells on the cervix caused by HPV.

One good-quality multivitamin with adequate doses of active nutrients is smarter and more effective than taking 10 low-quality products.

What to Look for in a Multivitamin

Quality matters enormously. Avoid the cheapest options from big-box stores. Low cost means lower quality ingredients. Look for a supplement from a GMP-certified company (Good Manufacturing Process), one that tests for toxins and heavy metals and is gluten-free and dairy-free.

Check the “other ingredients” list on the back label. If it contains colors, preservatives, wax, or other unnecessary fillers, that is not a high-quality supplement. The best companies often have professional-grade product lines available only through licensed practitioners.

Key Nutrients to Look For

1. Vitamin A and Beta-Carotene: Beta-carotene is best obtained from colorful fruits and vegetables. Supplemental vitamin A is particularly protective against abnormal cells. A 1995 study found that women with severe cervical dysplasia had lower vitamin A levels in their tissue. Look for a multivitamin that includes actual vitamin A, not just beta-carotene. If you may become pregnant or are breastfeeding, keep your vitamin A dose under 10,000 IUs.

2. Vitamin C: Three studies from 1989 to 1991 showed that women who took vitamin C had a decreased risk of cervical cancer. Getting at least 500 mg in a multivitamin is a solid start.

3. Folate and B12: A 2012 study showed that lower folate and B12 levels are associated with a higher risk of severe dysplasia. Look specifically for methylfolate, not folic acid, which is the inactive form your body has to convert. If you have the MTHFR gene variation, this is especially important: one MTHFR C677T variation doubles your risk of abnormal cells, and two variations triple it. Also look for methylcobalamin, which is the active form of B12.

4. Selenium, Zinc, and Vitamin E: A 2012 study linked vitamin E and selenium to a lower risk of abnormal cells. A 2015 study found that 200 micrograms of selenium daily reduced the risk of cervical dysplasia. Zinc at approximately 15 mg per day has also been shown to help prevent dysplasia.

5. Vitamin D: Many of us are deficient in vitamin D, which is also protective against HPV and supportive of the immune system. Get a blood test to check your levels, and make sure your multivitamin includes some vitamin D.

My Recommended Multivitamin

The multivitamin I recommend is the All-in-One Multi by Nature Empowered Nutritionals. It contains active forms of methylfolate and methyl B12, along with high-quality vitamin A, C, E, selenium, and zinc. You only need two capsules per day, one in the morning and one in the evening, so your body is covered around the clock. Women consistently report feeling better: improved skin, hair, and energy.

What About Other Supplements

There are many other potential supplements to consider for HPV, from antioxidants, to herbs, mushrooms, and more. Through a process of careful clinical observation, and reviewing the research, I have developed a specific protocol of supplements that I suggest to my patients and program participants.

You can read more about my top 5 supplements for addressing HPV here, in the HPV supplement bundle. And for even more detail, including dosing instructions, and how to know which tests to order to determine your best doses, including for the proprietary vaginal suppository regimen I developed.

Please know that it’s not about taking these supplements forever. The goal is to help your body to clear HPV, and to rebuild your inner defenses so you can protect yourself going forward with a set of maintenance supplements.

Your Next Steps

Follow what I call your Self-C.A.R.E.: C for clean eating, A for adequate sleep, R for recovery activities, and E for exercise. Start with diet improvements, add a high-quality multivitamin, and build from there. The goal is to go back for your next exam and achieve negative HPV and negative abnormal cells.

What I find is that HPV is often just one sign that your body is asking for attention — and going through the process of addressing HPV can help you heal from anxiety, depression, migraines, sleep issues, hormone imbalances, gut issues, and more. This could be your opportunity to change the way you relate to your body and your health.

Here’s what I want you to hold onto: every single one of the susceptibilities to HPV can be tested for, addressed, and resolved. You are not powerless in this situation — quite the opposite. By asking the right questions and doing the right tests, you can take real, meaningful control of your health and give your immune system exactly what it needs to protect you.

The standard medical system doesn’t run the right tests, and most practitioners aren’t trained to interpret and act on the results. But that doesn’t mean your options are limited — it means you need the right guide. I’ve helped patients around the world clear HPV and go on to feel better than they had in years, because when you rebalance your whole system, everything improves — your energy, your sleep, your mood, your resilience.
