Quantum Biology: How Light, Electricity, and Nature Support Healing with Dr. Catherine Clinton (Episode 303)

Quantum biology is about how light, electricity, water and nature in general can influence the body in optimizing health and fostering healing at a fundamental level.
Quantum biology can transform the way we understand health and healing. Dr. Catherine Clinton joins Dr. Doni to talk about how light, electricity, and nature influence the body at its most fundamental level.

What is quantum biology and what does it mean for your health? I invited Dr. Catherine Clinton to explain it to us. She is a licensed Naturopathic Physician, the author of “Optimize: A Groundbreaking 7-Step Plan to Health and Longevity Through Quantum Biology,” and the founder and chair of the Quantum Biology Health Institute.

Dr. Catherine’s Personal Journey

Dr. Catherine’s path into quantum biology began during her second year of Naturopathic Medical school, when she became seriously ill. She was diagnosed with two autoimmune conditions and Lyme disease, and began experiencing panic attacks. Even with all the tools of naturopathic and Chinese medicine available to her, she only recovered enough to return to school and clinic — she could function, but she was not truly thriving. 

The gap between getting through the day and actually feeling healthy is something many people with chronic disease can relate to. It was in searching for that missing piece that she discovered quantum biology, and it was what finally took her from sick to genuinely well.

What Is Quantum Biology?

A quantum biology approach to health looks at the body as an energetic system. It examines how mitochondria produce cellular energy, and how the body acts as an antenna for unseen information in the world — light, sound, electromagnetic waves, thoughts, and emotions — all of which create measurable change in the body. 

Rather than viewing the body through a purely chemical or mechanical lens, quantum biology recognizes that energy comes first and guides biology at the most fundamental level.

The Role of Light

In 2017, three researchers received the Nobel Prize for their work on chronobiology — how light impacts the body. They found that almost every single cell has a circadian clock sensitive to the light in our environment, which cues our hormones, immune system, metabolism, neurotransmitters, and inflammatory state. Every major body system — cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, immune — is driven by our relationship with light.

Modern life has largely disconnected us from natural light. Many people spend entire days indoors under artificial LED lighting, which emits only a narrow band of blue light. Natural sunlight provides a full spectrum — ultraviolet, visible, and infrared — and is dramatically brighter. Dr. Catherine describes natural light as nutrition: Going outside is like eating whole food, while LED lighting is like a processed product with only one nutrient.

Infrared light in particular plays a critical role in mitochondrial function. Research from University College London has shown that infrared energy is one of the primary nutrients of the mitochondria, influencing how we produce cellular energy. This has direct implications for metabolic issues, insulin resistance, obesity, diabetes, and overall energy levels.

Dr. Catherine’s own daily practice is simple: She goes outside within an hour of waking, ideally barefoot, for five to fifteen minutes. This sets off biological cascades that regulate hormones, metabolism, and the immune system. She also takes natural light breaks during the day and lowers lights in the evening, shifting toward warmer, red-toned lighting. This cues melatonin release, supports thyroid hormones, and prepares the body for deep, restorative sleep.

Electricity, Water, and the Body

The body is not only chemical and mechanical — it is also fundamentally electrical. Every cell holds an electrical charge, and any loss of that charge is associated with loss of function and communication, closely linked to autoimmune conditions and chronic disease. 

Fascia, the connective tissue web throughout the body, is made largely of collagen, which is semiconductive and can hold and transmit electrical charge. Fascia is also piezoelectric, meaning pressure applied to it generates an electrical charge.

Water plays a central role in this system. Inside the body, water that contacts cell membranes and fascial surfaces takes on a structured, liquid-crystal form. This structured water carries a negative charge, acts as a biological battery, and functions as an antenna for the frequency information — light, sound, electromagnetic fields — that guides cellular behavior. It also supports lymphatic flow and helps push toxins out of the extracellular matrix.

Breath and Resonant Breathing

Because fascia is piezoelectric, deep breathing — which expands the lungs and compresses the diaphragm — generates pressure that creates electrical charge throughout the fascial network. Breath also draws in oxygen rich in electrons to feed the mitochondria, and nasal breathing helps build structured water in the body. 

Dr. Catherine recommends resonant breathing: approximately six breaths per minute, inhaling for four counts and exhaling for six. This breath rate has a frequency of 0.1 Hertz, which aligns with blood flow, heart rate variability, heart coherence, and the geomagnetic field of the earth. Even one to two minutes can shift the nervous system and retrain the body over time.

Movement and the Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system removes toxins and dysfunctional cells throughout the body, but it has no pump — it relies on movement. Walking, dancing, rebounding, and gently tapping the major lymph node areas all support lymphatic flow. 

Infrared energy — from the sun, warm baths, sauna, or movement — also builds structured water in the body, which helps propel the lymphatic system and push toxins toward the liver for elimination.

The Seven Steps in the Optimize Book

Dr. Catherine’s book “Optimize” organizes this knowledge into seven practical steps: Water, the body’s electrical capacity, light, the relationship with nature, sound, cultivating coherence, and the microbiome and immune system from a quantum biology perspective. 

Each chapter ends with concrete, accessible actions. These are not expensive interventions — they are a return to what the human body has always needed: Sunlight, breath, movement, water, and connection with nature.

The Quantum Biology Health Institute recently completed a research study with UC San Diego on mitochondrial function and heart coherence practice. Participants performed just five minutes per day of heart coherence breathing over 42 days and showed significant, often dramatic increases in mitochondrial function. This is the direction Dr. Catherine is excited to see medicine move — and it is an invitation for all of us to return to safety, belonging, and genuine health.
