When you are testing positive for high-risk HPV, what you can actually do about it? Let me walk you through the five most common underlying susceptibilities that prevent your immune system from clearing the virus, because understanding this is the key to finally getting rid of HPV for good.
First, You Are Not Alone
If your doctor told you to come back in six to twelve months to retest and see whether the HPV virus is still there or whether abnormal cells have developed, you are not alone. This is an incredibly common situation. Research shows that at least 80% of us will test positive for HPV by age 50, and as screening becomes more widespread, even more people are going to find out that they have HPV (including men).
Here’s what’s important to understand: 90% of cases clear high-risk HPV on their own within two years. That means your doctor is essentially waiting to see whether your immune system handles it naturally.
If the virus remains beyond two years, or if abnormal cells begin to develop, you are in the 10% where the virus has become persistent. That persistence increases the risk of developing cancers — cervical, vaginal, anal, and oral — in both women and men (oral, anal and penile).
The standard medical approach, unfortunately, is simply to screen and observe. But there is so much more you can do to support your immune system and help your body clear the HPV virus.

Second, It’s Not About a Magic Pill
One of the first things people do when they test positive is search for a supplement. Many come across AHCC — a shiitake mushroom extract — which has been studied and shown to be 60–70% effective at helping to clear HPV. But it is not 100% effective, and many patients come to me having already taken AHCC for months or years, and find that HPV is still present.
The truth is, there is not one magic pill. It’s also not about randomly taking vitamin C, D, E, and a handful of other nutrients either.
What works is a strategic, comprehensive protocol that gets to the root of why your immune system is not protecting you in the first place. The human immune system has the ability to clear HPV — so we need to ask: what is getting in the way?
The Five Most Common Susceptibilities
1. Stress and Trauma
Stress — whether from your current life, relationships, work, finances, or loss, or from the past — lowers immune function. And trauma, even from childhood or ancestral experiences, can suppress the immune system for years. Research clearly links trauma exposure with increased risk of HPV and cervical cancer.
The goal isn’t to eliminate stress entirely — that’s not realistic. The goal is to help your body *recover* from stress. That means prioritizing sleep, nourishing foods, hydration, and recovery practices like meditation, breathwork, and time in nature.
When we support stress recovery, the immune system becomes much better equipped to protect you from HPV.
2. Nutrient Deficiencies
Nutrient deficiencies are extremely common and often go undetected because standard blood panels don’t test for them accurately.
Vitamin D deficiency is widespread. Iron is another common deficiency, but not for everyone. B vitamins are especially critical because they support methylation — the process by which your body makes healthy cells. Without adequate B vitamins, the risk of HPV causing abnormal cells increases significantly.
Getting the *right* tests matters. Once we identify which nutrients are deficient, we can give your body the right doses — and you’ll know going forward what your body specifically needs.
3. Microbiome Imbalances
Most people think of the gut when they hear “microbiome,” but there’s also a vaginal microbiome that plays a direct role in protecting against HPV.
Antibiotics, stress, gluten, pesticide exposure, and infections like yeast or bacterial vaginosis can all disrupt these microbial communities. When bacteria are out of balance, they can’t send the right signals to your immune system.
Standard testing won’t catch this. What we need is a PCR analysis of the stool and vaginal microbiome — this tells us exactly who is present and whether anything is out of balance. Once we know, we can address it with antimicrobial herbs and probiotics through a targeted protocol, not guesswork.
4. Hormone Imbalances
Estrogen, cortisol, insulin, and thyroid hormones all influence your body’s ability to clear HPV. Estrogen that’s too high or too low, cortisol dysregulation from chronic stress, and insulin resistance can each increase susceptibility.
The good news is that all of these can be measured — in blood, urine, or saliva — and brought back into balance. When hormones are optimized, not only does your immune protection improve, but your energy, mood, and sleep improve too.
5. Toxin Exposure
Pesticides in food, mold from water-damaged buildings, environmental chemicals in plastics, cleaning products, and personal care items all suppress immune function and increase oxidative stress — making abnormal cell development more likely.
Urine testing can identify specific mold toxins, environmental toxins, and heavy metals. Once we know what we’re dealing with, I can design a targeted detoxification program. General detox programs can be a useful starting point, but targeted approaches prevent the common problem of feeling worse before feeling better.
HPV Is Sending a Message
If HPV is present and not clearing, that is a message from your body — your immune system is struggling, and something beneath the surface hasn’t been identified or addressed.
But here’s what I want you to hold onto: every single one of these susceptibilities can be tested for, addressed, and resolved. You are not powerless in this — quite the opposite. By asking the right questions and doing the right tests, you can take real, meaningful control of your health and give your immune system exactly what it needs to protect you.
The standard medical system doesn’t run the right tests, and most practitioners aren’t trained to interpret and act on the results. But that doesn’t mean your options are limited — it means you need the right guide.
