HPV and Cervical Cancer: The Importance of a Pap Smear – Dr. Doni on the Health and Wellness Show Bloom

Cervical cancer often develops without early warning signs, which makes pap smears and HPV testing essential for early detection.

Cervical cancer is often known as “the silent killer” since it can develop without symptoms for several years. That is why HPV and Woman’s Health Expert, Dr. Doni Wilson, joins Gayle Guyardo , the host of the nationally syndicated health and wellness show Bloom, to discuss the critical importance of a Pap smear. You can listen to the interview here.

Pap tests remain crucial for women from age 21 to 65 and beyond, with recommended screenings at least every three years. Dr. Doni explains that modern screening approaches have evolved, with doctors now commonly including high-risk HPV testing alongside Pap smears.

This additional layer of testing is particularly important because 99% of cervical cancer is associated with thirteen types of high-risk HPV.

When patients test positive for this virus, it serves as an early warning sign that they could potentially develop cervical cancer, allowing for proactive health management.

HPV Risk Factors and Age-Related Concerns

Contrary to the common belief that this virus primarily affects younger, sexually active women in their 20s, Dr. Doni reveals that cases are increasingly appearing in women aged 50 and above. Many women in their 50s and 60s, and even some in their 70s, are discovering they have high-risk HPV, often leaving them shocked by the diagnosis.

This phenomenon occurs due to significant hormonal changes during menopause and perimenopause, which affect estrogen levels in the vagina and subsequently alter the vaginal microbiome and bacteria, making women more susceptible to the virus.

Dr. Doni explains that the virus can either lie dormant and resurface during these hormonal changes, or women may contract it from new sexual partners. Additionally, stress plays a significant role in its manifestation.

Women who have experienced major life stressors—such as divorce, the loss of a loved one, various health challenges, or even the collective stress of living through the pandemic—may find themselves more vulnerable to the virus due to compromised immune function.

Prevention, Protection, and Proactive Healthcare Measures

Dr. Doni provides comprehensive insights into HPV prevention and healthcare management strategies. While discussing preventive measures, she addresses the limitations of the HPV vaccine, which currently covers nine of the thirteen high-risk types but doesn’t provide complete protection.

This partial coverage means that even vaccinated individuals may still test positive, leading many to seek additional guidance on protecting their health. She emphasizes the importance of being proactive during medical visits, encouraging patients to specifically request testing for this virus and to obtain copies of their test results rather than simply accepting a general “everything’s OK” response from their healthcare provider.

Cervical cancer represents the third most common cancer in the United States, underscoring the importance of comprehensive screening and follow-up care. Dr. Doni offers encouragement by noting that in 90% of cases, the virus clears within two years even without intervention.

However, she expresses concern that many women suffer in silence due to embarrassment or lack of information about available protective measures. To address this information gap, Dr. Doni has created free resources on her website to help women understand the virus, learn about protection methods, and take steps to prevent cancer development.
