Many people are told that once they test positive for HPV, they’ll always test positive for the virus and can never get rid of HPV. In this episode I want to challenge this common misconception. It’s actually possible to eliminate the HPV virus from your body.
This information is crucial because it offers hope and empowerment to those who have been diagnosed with HPV. It’s important to understand that you’re not powerless against this virus, and there are steps you can take to protect your health.
Understanding HPV Exposure
Let’s start by understanding that HPV is indeed a sexually transmitted virus. However, it’s crucial to recognize that most of us are exposed to this virus at some point in our lives. In fact, studies show that 80% of people are exposed to the HPV virus by age 50. This statistic might seem alarming, but it’s important to put it into context.
This high exposure rate means that while most of us come into contact with high-risk HPV, not all of us test positive or develop cervical or vaginal cancer. This is a critical point because it highlights that exposure doesn’t automatically lead to infection or long-term health problems.
This raises an important question: why do some people test positive and others don’t, even when exposed?
The answer lies in our body’s ability to clear the virus and protect us from future infections. This natural defense mechanism is something we’ll explore further.
The Body’s Natural Defense Against HPV
Research has demonstrated that the human body can clear the virus on its own. This is a powerful testament to our body’s innate ability to protect itself.
As a naturopathic doctor and midwife, I’ve helped thousands of women overcome high-risk HPV for life. Through my experience and research, I can confidently say that the notion that HPV can never go away is a complete myth.
Your body has the potential to protect you from HPV, even if you’re exposed again in the future, whether with the same partner or a different one.
This is crucial information because it shifts the narrative from one of helplessness to one of empowerment. You’re not at the mercy of the virus; your body has the tools to fight it off.
The Seriousness of an HPV Diagnosis
While it’s encouraging to know that your body can fight off HPV, it’s important to emphasize that testing positive for HPV or receiving an HPV diagnosis is a serious matter.
Even if your doctor suggests waiting and retesting to see if it develops into cancer, I strongly encourage you to be proactive in addressing the virus. The goal should be to test negative when you go for your next Pap smear.
To put this into perspective, each year in the United States, there are 11,500 new cases of cervical cancer, and 4,000 women die from it. These statistics underscore the seriousness of HPV and its potential to be life-threatening. It’s absolutely worth taking the time to understand and take proactive steps to prevent it from causing cancer in your body.
Being proactive doesn’t mean living in fear, but rather taking charge of your health. It means making informed decisions and taking steps to support your body’s natural defenses against the virus.
Recognizing Subtle Symptoms of HPV
Many practitioners will tell you that there are no symptoms of high-risk HPV. While it’s true that low-risk HPV causes genital warts, high-risk HPV doesn’t typically present with visible symptoms.
However, I encourage you to realize that there are subtle signs your body may be giving you that could be related to HPV.
These symptoms are signals from your body indicating that it’s overwhelmed and needs attention. They can include:
- Fatigue: You might find yourself feeling tired more often than usual, even after a full night’s sleep.
- Bloating: This could manifest as a feeling of fullness or swelling in your abdomen.
- Anxiety: You might experience increased worry or unease, particularly about your health.
- Waking up in the middle of the night worrying about HPV: This could be a sign of underlying stress related to your diagnosis.
- Difficulty making decisions: You might find it harder to concentrate or make choices in your daily life.
- Digestive upset: This could include changes in your bowel habits or discomfort after eating.
- Menstrual or perimenopausal symptoms: You might notice changes in your menstrual cycle, heavy bleeding, pain, PMS, or perimenopausal symptoms like hot flashes.
- Vaginal infections: Recurring yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis (BV) could be a sign of an imbalanced vaginal microbiome.
- Bladder infections: Frequent urinary tract infections could be another sign of microbiome imbalance.
- Changes in skin: You might notice changes in your skin’s texture or appearance.
You might dismiss these as signs of aging or unrelated issues, but they could be telling you that your body is depleted and needs attention.
It’s important to pay attention to these subtle signals and address them, as they could be indicators of your body’s struggle against HPV.
How HPV Takes Advantage of a Weakened System
When your body is depleted of nutrients, experiencing hormone imbalances, or dealing with neurotransmitter imbalances, you start to feel unwell. This is precisely when the HPV virus can take advantage of the situation.
The virus can “sense” when we’re experiencing symptoms of burnout, nutrient deficiency, hormone imbalances, or microbiome imbalances. It seizes this opportunity to cause abnormal cells.
Think of it like this: when you’re stressed, overworked, or not taking care of yourself, your body’s defenses are lowered. This creates an environment where the HPV virus can thrive and potentially cause more damage.
If you’re testing positive for HPV and experiencing some of the symptoms mentioned earlier, it’s a high alert situation. We need to help your body heal and address the deficiencies and imbalances to protect you.
Otherwise, the HPV virus is constantly running a program in the background, with your body trying to protect you 100% of the time. When other stressors or illnesses occur, your body has even more work to do and may not be able to keep up.
This is why it’s crucial to address not just the HPV virus itself, but also the overall health of your body. By strengthening your body’s natural defenses, you’re creating an environment where HPV can’t thrive.
The Progression of HPV in the Body
When your body can’t keep up with the demands, the HPV virus can cause more damage. It typically starts with the cells of the cervix and may spread to the cells of the vagina or other areas of the body. The virus begins to damage the DNA of the cells, which can then progress to cancer in that tissue.
This progression doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a gradual process that occurs when the virus is left unchecked in a body that’s struggling to defend itself. This is why early intervention and proactive health measures are so important.
To prevent this progression, we need to help your body recover from various stresses – from childhood experiences to toxic relationships, environmental toxins, nutrient deficiencies, and even necessary medications.
By building up your resiliency, your body can focus on fighting the HPV virus and protecting you from future infections.
Five Tips to Get Rid of HPV Naturally
Now that we understand how HPV operates in the body, let’s discuss five practical steps you can take to support your body in fighting off the virus naturally.
1. Prioritize Self-Care
As women, we often don’t prioritize our self-care, focusing instead on taking care of others. It’s crucial to learn how to take care of yourself, even if it seems impossible to find the time. Start small – even one or five minutes can make a difference. Here’s an acronym I use for self-care: CARE.
- C: Clean eating – Focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods that support your body’s natural functions.
- A: Adequate sleep – Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to allow your body to repair and rejuvenate.
- R: Recovery activities – This includes time in nature, journaling, or listening to music. These activities help reduce stress and support your mental health.
- E: Exercise or movement – Regular physical activity supports your immune system and overall health.
Remember, self-care isn’t selfish. It’s necessary for your health and wellbeing, especially when you’re trying to get rid of HPV.
2. Listen to Your Body’s Signals
Start paying attention to the signals your body is sending you. These aren’t signs that your body is failing you; they’re indications that it needs attention. For example:
- Bloating may mean you’re not digesting food well. This could be a sign that you need to support your digestive system with enzymes or probiotics.
- Pain (emotional or physical) could indicate inflammation in your body. This might mean you need to address your diet or stress levels.
- Constant fatigue might suggest hormone imbalances or nutrient deficiencies. This could be a sign that you need to look into your thyroid function or vitamin levels.
These issues can often be addressed with natural approaches, nutrients, herbs, and natural hormones. By listening to these signals and addressing them, you’re supporting your body’s ability to fight off HPV.
3. Conduct Specialized Testing
While standard blood work can provide some information, specialized testing can be a game-changer. These tests, often not covered by insurance, can provide detailed information about:
- Food sensitivities and leaky gut – These can contribute to inflammation in your body, weakening your immune system.
- Cortisol levels – Cortisol is your stress hormone, and imbalances can affect your body’s ability to fight off infections.
- Estrogen and progesterone imbalances – Hormone imbalances can create an environment where HPV thrives.
- Liver detoxification of estrogens – Your liver plays a crucial role in hormone balance and overall health.
- Microbiome imbalances in the gut and vagina – A healthy microbiome is crucial for fighting off HPV.
This information allows us to create a targeted plan to address your specific needs. By identifying and addressing these underlying issues, we can create an environment in your body where HPV can’t thrive.
4. Tend to Your Microbiome
The microbiome – the healthy microbes in your gut and other areas of your body – plays a crucial role in protecting you from HPV and other infections.
Stress, toxins, and medications can disrupt this delicate balance. We can use DNA analysis to identify imbalances in the microbiome and then take steps to reestablish a healthy balance using herbs, nutrients, and specific probiotics.
A healthy microbiome doesn’t just support your digestive health – it’s crucial for your overall immune function. By supporting a diverse and balanced microbiome, you’re strengthening your body’s natural defenses against HPV and other pathogens.
5. Take Supplements at Clinical Doses
While it’s tempting to create a long list of supplements based on internet research, it’s crucial to take a strategic approach. As a doctor with years of experience in this field, I can guide you to high-grade supplements at clinical doses that effectively support your immune system, restore nutrient deficiencies, balance hormones, and address microbiome imbalances.
It’s important to note that not all supplements are created equal. The quality, dosage, and combination of supplements can make a significant difference in their effectiveness. That’s why it’s crucial to work with a knowledgeable healthcare provider who can guide you to the right supplements for your specific needs.
More Resources and Support
Remember, there’s no magic pill to eliminate HPV. It’s about taking a step back, listening to your body, and being willing to invest in your health. By gathering the right information and making strategic changes based on your specific needs, you can protect yourself from HPV and many other health issues.
This approach isn’t just about fighting off HPV – it’s about creating overall health and wellness that will serve you for years to come. By addressing underlying imbalances and supporting your body’s natural functions, you’re not only protecting yourself from HPV but also improving your overall health and quality of life.
I’ve helped thousands of women finally test negative for HPV and maintain that status for years – some for over 15 years. It’s possible to protect yourself from HPV, even high-risk types, and even if you’ve had them for many years. These success stories are a testament to the power of a holistic, natural approach to health.
