Have you been healing with music?

You are here:

Have you been healing with music?

I found myself noticing the other day that I've not been listening to music lately, and I miss it!

The Pandora application on my iphone had gotten stuck, I find it difficult to search for stations while I'm driving and, in general, I tend to make a phone call over playing music.  What was I thinking?!!

Within a few clicks Pandora was working again, just in time for a trip to the national naturopathic conference in Scottsdale, AZ for the weekend.  Low and behold (I had not previously realized), the name of the conference was "Composing Effective Patient Care" which meant I was in store for more realizations about the influences of music on healing, as well important updates on the implementation of clinical nutrition and natural medicine (more about those soon).

Sure enough, I was completely reminded and informed by my colleague who presented on the subject that music supports serotonin and dopamine, two of the most commonly disrupted neurotransmitters, and that sound in general is profoundly beneficial to the human brain from before birth, and throughout life.

Perhaps you too have seen the cute videos on YouTube showing babies "talking" to each other in baby talk and infants "dancing" to music, as demonstrations of how sound and music is so influential even at the start of life, and certainly before our lives become cluttered with work and activities.

Music and laughter (another sound) also act as means to bring us together with others, which is healing in itself. It makes me wonder if some of the benefit of yoga (which is well established based on research for most every health condition) is the exposure to music and chanting that coincides with yoga practice.

Did you know that music can actually decrease the likelihood of overeating, and I would like to propose that it could help with weight loss, in addition to improving mood and well-being.

At the conference I met Barry Goldstein, musician and artist who designs music for healing.  You can download his music, called Ambiology, from itunes. I've been listening to it as I write this article!

If, like me, you notice that music has disappeared from your day, I encourage you to take a few minutes to think of ways you can bring it back in, whether by finding a station you like in your car, buying a new speaker for your iphone/ipod to play in your home, or downloading a program like Rdio or Pandora.
Wishing you healing harmonies,

Dr. Doni
