CBD and CBG: Complete Medical Benefits Guide with Justin Finneman (Episode 236)

CBD and CBG are cannabinoids – natural compounds that behave as “stress recovery substances” with a strong safety profile when properly dosed.
CBD and CBG expert Justin Finneman joins Dr. Doni to discuss how these natural compounds offer potential benefits for pain, anxiety, sleep, and cognitive function, while maintaining a strong safety profile when properly dosed.

CBD and CBG are natural compounds that offer potential benefits for pain, anxiety, sleep, and cognitive function – while maintaining a strong safety profile when properly dosed.

That’s why I’m excited to introduce you to Justin Finneman. He is a CBD and CBG (cannabinoid) expert and president of sales for Küribl Clinical, joining us here today to help us understand cannabis, hemp, CBD, their health benefits, and everything related to these fascinating compounds.

Justin is also a father and lover of health optimization in general. He’s helped practitioners run their clinics, giving him extensive background in both clinical experience and expertise with hemp, cannabis, CBD, and CBG.

He has especially found cannabinoids to be an effective alternative for pain and anxiety.

In my book Master Your Stress Reset Your Health, I discuss cannabinoids as a “stress recovery substance,” so I’m especially excited to have this conversation with Justin and share this detailed information with all of you.

In this interview, we’ll be discussing cannabinoids, what is the difference between hemp and marijuana, the potential health benefits, safety and use guidelines, how to find and choose a quality product, and precautions. This is the perfect discussion if you are wondering about whether to try CBD to help with your health issue.

Justin’s Journey into CBD Expertise

Justin’s path to becoming a CBD expert wasn’t one he initially planned. His background was in regenerative medicine, working for a clinic that offered a comprehensive range of services including regenerative treatments, weight loss programs, nutrition courses, functional medicine, massage, and physical therapy. This integrated health model sparked his passion for helping people address the root causes of their health issues, improve sleep, and reduce inflammation and pain.

His journey took an unexpected turn when a Minnesota company approached him with an innovative vision. They wanted to bring pain products exclusively to healthcare providers and physicians, focusing on natural solutions rather than conventional pharmaceuticals. Initially, there was some hesitation – Justin’s wife expressed concern about selling cannabis products across the country. However, Justin, who suffered from severe stenosis in his lower back, decided to explore the opportunity by trying the product himself.

What he discovered at their facility was far beyond his expectations. He was greeted by PhD chemists from the University of Minnesota and found himself immersed in a true seed-to-you hemp and cannabis operation. Right there in Hastings, Minnesota, they managed every aspect of production – from planting seeds and tilling fields to growing, testing, extracting, and producing the final product. This wasn’t just any cannabis company; they were processing approximately 80% of Minnesota’s hemp, making them a cornerstone of the state’s hemp industry.

After trying their pain topical muscle cream, Justin experienced remarkable relief from his stenosis symptoms. This personal experience, combined with the company’s mission to provide alternatives to opioids and create daily solutions for pain management, aligned perfectly with his background in regenerative medicine. He recognized that this approach matched his philosophy of avoiding steroid injections and instead focusing on helping people eat right, sleep better, and optimize their overall health through functional medicine.

Excited by the potential, Justin began sending samples to doctors across the country. The response was overwhelming – before he knew it, he had 30 accounts. Today, that number has grown to over 400 clinics across 35 states. Their product line has expanded beyond their initial offerings to include an exclusive line of topicals and tinctures for clinical use, as well as retail products including specialized formulations for pets.

Understanding Hemp and Cannabis

For those who are new to the world of CBD, it’s essential to understand the legalities and differences between hemp and CBD versus marijuana, which is state-regulated. Many people don’t realize that the cannabis plant species actually grows both hemp and marijuana plants – they’re distinct varieties with different properties and uses.

Hemp typically contains high levels of CBD and minimal THC, while marijuana contains higher levels of THC. What’s fascinating is that both plants contain over 100 different cannabinoids, each with its own potential benefits and effects on the human body.

A significant milestone came in 2018 when the federal government passed the Farm Bill. This legislation made hemp-derived products federally legal, with the specific requirement that they contain no more than 0.3% THC by weight. While marijuana continues to be regulated at the state level, hemp has moved into federal regulation, though some state-specific rules may still apply. This distinction is crucial for understanding the legal landscape of these products and their availability across the country.

Hemp is remarkably versatile, offering a myriad of uses beyond just CBD extraction. The plant itself is incredibly durable, and while it naturally contains some THC, processors can effectively extract CBD away from the THC and other cannabinoids. This versatility and the ability to isolate specific compounds makes hemp an incredibly valuable agricultural resource with potential applications across multiple industries.

The Endocannabinoid System and Health Benefits

The way cannabinoids interact with our bodies is nothing short of remarkable. These compounds work through our endocannabinoid system, a complex network that’s integral to our overall health and wellness. When we consume phytocannabinoids from plants, they naturally integrate with our own endocannabinoid system, which is intimately connected to our immune system and various other bodily functions.

Stephen Porges’ polyvagal theory provides fascinating insights into how cannabinoids help regulate our nervous system. These compounds work to create homeostasis in the body, producing an overall calming effect that can benefit multiple body systems simultaneously. This regulation affects not only our immune and nervous systems but also extends to our digestive system and beyond.

One of the most interesting aspects of our endocannabinoid system is the presence of cannabinoid receptors throughout our gut. This explains why many people with conditions like Crohn’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome often find significant relief from cannabis-based products. The benefits extend far beyond gut health – everything from blood pressure regulation to pain management, sleep improvement, mood, and various other health issues can be positively impacted by cannabis and hemp products.

In my book, Master Your Stress Reset Your Health, I (Dr. Doni) discuss the vital role that cannabinoids and cannabidiol oils play in stress recovery. This is particularly relevant in today’s world, where we’re constantly bombarded with stressors. When we’re under stress, our stress response system can become overactive while our anti-stress system struggles to maintain balance.

What makes the endocannabinoid system so unique is that it’s separate from our hormones, immune system, and nervous system, yet it has the remarkable ability to help reset and restore our body’s natural balance.

CBD vs. CBG: Understanding the Differences

When we discuss CBD and CBG, we’re talking about different molecules within the same plant, each with its own unique properties and benefits. CBG holds a special place in the cannabis family – it’s known as the “mother cannabinoid” because it essentially gives birth to other cannabinoids.

Justin revealed a fascinating detail about this process: when the plant is young, it starts as CBG-A, which is a raw acidic form of CBG, before transforming into other cannabinoids. This transformation process helps explain why different cannabinoids can have such varying effects on our bodies.

To help understand this concept, Justin offered a brilliant analogy: think about vitamin D and vitamin C. Both are vitamins, but they serve completely different functions in our body. Similarly, while CBD and CBG are related cannabinoids, they have distinct benefits based on their unique molecular structures and how they interact with our bodies.

This difference in molecular structure explains why some people might respond better to one compound over the other.

The Unique Benefits of CBG

The benefits of CBG are particularly exciting in the field of cognitive health. CBG is primarily known for providing cognitive support, enhancing clarity and focus, and improving memory function.

During our discussion, Justin shared insights about Dr. Bonni Goldstein, an MD based in California, who has been using CBG to treat young teenagers and children as an alternative to conventional stimulants like Adderall. What makes CBG especially interesting is its ability to center and calm the brain without causing the tiredness that some people experience with CBD.

Recent clinical observations have shown some remarkable results. Justin shared a striking example where a naturopathic doctor reported that a patient’s high blood pressure dropped by 30 points within just 20 minutes of using CBG. The patient’s systolic blood pressure had been 170, but the rapid improvement demonstrated CBG’s powerful potential for anxiety relief and overall body balancing.

While CBG shares many benefits with CBD, including anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial properties, it truly excels in the realm of cognitive support. Its effectiveness for memory, focus, clarity, and concentration has caught the attention of the medical community.

This growing recognition of cannabinoids’ therapeutic potential is evidenced by the FDA’s approval of Epidiolex, a CBD-based drug used to treat epileptic seizures.

Safety and Usage Guidelines

One of the most important aspects of CBD and CBG that we discussed is their safety profile.

Unlike THC, these compounds don’t create psychoactive responses. The science behind this is fascinating: while THC binds directly to CB1 or CB2 receptors in the brain, CBD and CBG interact with these receptors in a different way. In fact, research has shown that CBD can actually help reduce THC’s psychoactive response, which is why some products combine these compounds.

The key difference lies in how these molecules attach to brain receptors. CBD and CBG don’t bind to the brain receptors in the same way THC does, which explains why you won’t experience a “high” from using these products. This also means they don’t create dependency or withdrawal symptoms, making them safe for long-term use when properly dosed.

Product Quality and Selection

During our conversation, Justin shared some concerning statistics about the CBD industry. Approximately 70% of hemp products currently circulating in the United States come from co-ops where the hemp source is unknown. This lack of transparency poses significant challenges for consumers seeking quality products.

When looking for CBD or CBG products, it’s crucial to find companies that provide easily accessible third-party testing results. These results should verify not only the accuracy and potency of cannabinoids but also confirm the absence of heavy metals, herbicides, and pesticides.

At Küribl (the company where Justin works) they’ve taken extraordinary measures to ensure product quality. Through their seed-to-you process, they conduct internal testing three times before sending products for third-party verification.

This rigorous testing ensures consistent potency and purity in their products. When test results lead to a broken link or error page, that’s a red flag. You want to be able to verify that the product contains exactly what it claims – if a bottle says 3000 milligrams, you should be able to confirm that’s exactly what you’re getting.

Dosing and Individual Response

One of the most fascinating aspects of CBD and CBG is how differently people respond to these compounds. Justin made an interesting comparison to how people react differently to alcohol – some people are more sensitive than others due to their unique brain chemistry and genetic makeup.

The good news is that hemp and cannabis-derived products have a very high safety margin, making it much easier to find the right dose for each individual.

When starting with CBD or CBG, it’s best to begin with a half serving to assess your tolerance. Pay attention to how your body responds. If you get great results from 25 milligrams of CBG oil, there’s no need to take the full 50 milligrams. Unlike many substances, CBD and CBG don’t typically create tolerance or dependency, so once you find your effective dose, you can usually maintain it over time.

The duration of effects can vary significantly from person to person. Some people find that a morning dose lasts all day, while others might need to repeat the dose midday. The key is listening to your body and working with your healthcare provider to find the optimal dosing schedule.

Küribl is currently participating in various studies with regenerative medicine practitioners to better understand dosing specifics, though more research is still needed in this area.

Potential Interactions and Precautions

During our discussion, Justin emphasized the importance of being aware of potential interactions between CBD/CBG and certain medications.

One of the most significant concerns is the interaction with blood thinners – CBD can enhance their efficiency, potentially requiring dosage adjustments. Both CBD and CBG can also affect blood pressure (in a good way), so if you’re taking blood pressure medication, it’s essential to monitor your response carefully and adjust your doses accordingly.

Some patients have successfully used these products while on various medications, but it’s crucial to work with a knowledgeable healthcare provider who understands both conventional medications and cannabinoids.

As your symptoms improve with CBD or CBG use, you might find that you need less of your other medications. However, any medication adjustments should always be made under professional guidance.

The medical landscape is evolving, and while not all practitioners are fully educated about CBD and CBG, more are becoming knowledgeable about these compounds. It’s important to find a healthcare provider who stays current with the research and can help you navigate the integration of these products into your overall health plan.

Product Forms and Applications

During our discussion, Justin detailed the various forms of CBD and CBG products that Küribl offers.

Their clinical strength products are exclusively available through healthcare providers – you’ll need to find them in a doctor’s office. However, they also maintain a website where they offer lower strength products for general consumer use. The product range is quite extensive, demonstrating the versatility of these compounds.

Their topical applications have been particularly successful. These products combine CBD with other beneficial ingredients like arnica, menthol, and camphor to provide enhanced relief for localized pain and inflammation.

The success of their topicals is largely due to their high concentration of active ingredients and proper analgesic combinations – factors that many other products on the market lack.

The tinctures and oils remain their most popular products for systemic use. These forms are particularly effective for addressing anxiety, sleep issues, and overall wellness.

What’s fascinating is how successful their pet products have become – they sell an remarkable amount of CBD dog treats across the country. Pet owners report significant improvements in their animals’ anxiety levels, and some have even noticed a reduction in seizure activity.

Beyond these basic forms, Küribl has developed specialty products like CBD-infused Epsom salts for soaking and even CBD chapsticks for lip care.

In my own practice (Dr. Doni speaking), I’ve found CBD particularly helpful for patients with joint hypermobility and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (I am living proof of this!). These conditions can cause joints to move out of place frequently, leading to muscle spasms. The ability to apply CBD products directly to the skin where it’s needed has been remarkably effective. The absorption through the skin provides targeted relief, which is especially valuable for these types of conditions.

Justin pointed out an important distinction about topical applications – they don’t interact with the body systemically in the same way as oils or edible products. However, when you have a high concentration of CBD combined with the right analgesic ingredients, the local effect can be quite powerful. This is particularly true for their products, which maintain higher potency levels than many competitors.

As a practitioner, I always want to ensure I’m recommending products that will provide consistent clinical benefits to my patients. This is why understanding the source and quality of CBD products is so crucial. When patients come to me asking about CBD, they often share stories of trying various products without success. This usually stems from using products that either lack proper potency or quality control.

Through our conversation, it became clear why Küribl has experienced such rapid growth in the clinical space. Their commitment to quality control, from seed to final product, along with their focus on proper potency levels, sets them apart in an increasingly crowded market. This is particularly important in a field where quality can vary dramatically between products.

Integration with Conventional Medicine

Throughout our discussion, Justin emphasized the importance of integrating CBD and CBG products thoughtfully into existing medical protocols.

He shared an interesting perspective on how his background in regenerative medicine influenced his approach to these products. In the clinics he worked with, they offered everything from regenerative treatments and weight loss programs to nutrition courses, functional medicine, massage, and physical therapy.

This integrated health model aligns perfectly with the use of CBD and CBG products. Rather than viewing these compounds as standalone solutions, they work best as part of a comprehensive approach to health and wellness. The goal is to get to the core root of helping people sleep better, have less inflammation and pain, and optimize their overall health.

Conclusion and Next Steps

As we concluded our discussion, Justin shared his vision for the future of CBD and CBG in healthcare. He emphasized that while we’ve made significant progress in understanding these compounds, there’s still much to learn. The medical research is continuing to evolve, and we’re discovering more about proper dosing and applications every day.

What’s particularly exciting is the potential these products have to help reduce our society’s dependence on more harmful medications. As Justin pointed out, if we can help even a small percentage of patients manage their daily pain with natural hemp-derived products that have minimal negative consequences, we’re making a significant positive impact on public health.

CBD and CBG represent exciting developments in natural health care, offering promising alternatives for managing various conditions, from pain and anxiety to cognitive function and sleep issues.

It is clear that quality, proper dosing, and professional guidance are key factors in successfully incorporating these compounds into your health routine.

Most importantly, these natural compounds offer hope for those seeking alternatives to conventional medications, particularly for chronic conditions like pain, anxiety, and sleep disorders. As we continue to learn more about the endocannabinoid system and how these compounds work with our bodies, we’re better equipped to harness their potential for optimal health and wellness.

The future of CBD and CBG in healthcare looks incredibly promising. As we continue to learn more about these compounds and their interactions with our bodies’ natural systems, we’re likely to discover even more applications and benefits. Through careful research, quality control, and proper medical guidance, these natural compounds can play an important role in our journey toward optimal health and wellness.
